General dentistry

A check-up looks at your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of the mouth. X-rays are taken only when they are needed to see something the eye cannot.

You will be told what was found and what, if anything, needs attention, along with the options and their costs before any treatment begins.

Teeth cleanup and gum care

Professional cleaning removes hardened deposits (tartar) that brushing cannot. It is also a chance to check your gums for signs of gum disease.

How often you need it depends on your gums and habits; your dentist will suggest an interval that suits you.

Fillings

Decay is removed and the tooth is rebuilt, usually with a tooth-coloured composite material.

Small cavities caught early generally need simpler treatment than larger ones, which is one reason regular check-ups help.

Root canal treatment

When the soft tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) is infected or inflamed, root canal treatment cleans and seals the canals so the tooth can be kept.

It is done under local anaesthetic and may take more than one visit. A crown is often advised afterwards to protect the tooth.

Crowns and bridges

A crown covers and protects a tooth that is heavily filled, cracked or root-treated. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by attaching to the teeth on either side.

Your dentist will explain the materials available and which suits the tooth and your bite.

Dental implants

An implant is a small post placed in the jawbone that supports a crown, bridge or denture.

Not everyone is suitable. Bone, gum health, general health and habits such as smoking all matter, so an implant is planned only after an examination and any scans that are needed.

Teeth whitening

Professional whitening uses a bleaching gel under a dentist's supervision. Results vary from person to person, and some people notice temporary sensitivity.

Whitening does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers, so your dentist will check your teeth first.

Dental emergencies

If you have pain, swelling, a broken tooth or a lost filling or crown, contact the clinic and we will try to see you as soon as we can.

If you have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, heavy bleeding that will not stop, or a facial injury, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
